Things That Make You Go Hmm...

DateOctober 22, 2008 | written by AuthorTeri Cosenzi, Editor | Comment6 Comments | Share ArticleShare This

Remember that song, "Things that make you go, hmm..."? Once in a while I really wonder about some things as I am taken aback.

One of these things in particular came up this morning when I was watching a story on The Today Show. It was about a succesfful woman and her little dream, that turned big. Huge. It was about the woman who started Burt's Bees.

Long story short, while watching this story, I started to do a lot of hmm'ing when I heard that last year she sold her company, Burt's Bees to The Clorox Company. See where I started to wonder? Burts Bee's = natural, in my mind. Clorox = chemicals, in my mind. Am I wrong to think this is strange?

I am not here to judge anyone, I just though it was wise to point out - or maybe not. But as I walked the aisles of CVS tonight seeing an entire end cap of Burt's Bees,  thought I would write about my thoughts. Take it or leave it. It just strikes me as a bit odd.

I think it just goes to show that no matter how lofty and pure your ideas/ideals are, EVERYONE has their price. I guess Clorox figured out what it was!

Similarly, Colgate now owns Tom's of Maine! This may just be big corporations trying to capitalize on ALL genres by buying out niches that cover customers they don't. I think some of the people that buy natural products would be really turned off to learn this news though.

you have got to be kidding me. talk about a sell out. i don't care how ""green"" and ""earth friendly"" clorox is trying to amp up their cleaners, it is a fact that they produce toxic chemicals. and for the founder of burts bees to sell out to them is totally ridiculous. thanks for sharing.

Thank you sooooooooooo much for this article. It is peculiar how the Burt's Bees packaging says nothing about being made by or owned by Chlorox. I also find it very eye opening when thinking that these products are supposed to be made for the greater good of everyone. When reading the Burt's Bees site in the FAQ section it explains that the company sold out so it would be easier for Burt's Bees to outreach and be made available to everyone. Talk about selling out. I will be looking for a new lip balm for the Winter now. Again, thank you soooooooooo much for letting us know about this.

Does it really matter who owns what company? Burt's Bees make fine products that are natural and good for everyone. They were started before the Clorox company purchased them so it really shouldn't matter. It does not change my opinion of them at all.

Thank you for bringing this hilarity to my attention. I just got a newsletter from BB today and this is the funniest thing: "This month, vote for natural and you can be sure you’ve made the best choice for you and your family’s well-being." Coming from Clorox - what a joke.
