I've been growing my hair for the last two years since having a botched hair cut. I haven't had more than my layers or ends trimmed since then, and I am really happy with how my hair is shaping up. I am even growing my bangs out for the first time since I have been seven or eight years old. As I have been experimenting with different styling techniques, I have been learning to curl my longer layers with a flat iron.
Before using a flat iron, I've found that it helps to use dry shampoo at the roots to give hair volume and then hair texturizing spray to give my hair some texture and grip. Can you believe that I've given up hair spray? Not really! Instead of giving a total dose of hair spray all over, I use hair texturizing spray again to hold most of my curls in place and then give my hair a final once over at the very end with a very light finishing spray.
I've tried a few different flat irons and have come to really like the Chi G2 Ceramic & Titanium 1.25" Hairstyling Iron and T3 SinglePass Luxe 1" Straightening and Styling Iron.
Learning to curl hair with a flat iron like a pro took some time and instruction from my own stylist and some help from great tutorials, which have been really helpful.
This tutorial for short and medium length hair is very helpful. I wouldn't necessarily say that this woman has short hair as she describes it, as her hair is past her shoulders. Her technique is easy to follow and replicate with a wider flat iron.
This tutorial was SO helpful to me and I totally got it on the first try (I love how she said to practice with the flat iton off, first). I would wrap my hair around my curling wand all the time, so this technique made perfect sense to me and was simple. These curls last for days.
This tutorial is very easy to follow and I love the bouncy curls. I think the key is definitely sectioning off your hair, which is something I often would skip but have learned my lesson.
Do you use a curling iron, wand or flat iron to curl your hair?
